Social Media KPIs That Actually Matter to the C-Suite (And Which to Ignore)

Picture this: You enter the boardroom armed with a 30-page deck celebrating that your brand earned 4.2 million impressions, 80,000 likes, and a viral TikTok video that trended in 3 countries.

You look at the CFO, expecting praise. Instead, they look at you blankly and ask: "How much revenue did that generate, and how did it affect our pipeline this quarter?"

If you answer with follower counts, your social budget gets slashed next quarter.

Executive leadership does not speak social jargon. To command serious budget, you must translate social metrics into financial and operational impact.

The Metrics to Cut from Executive Reports

Never lead an executive presentation with these metrics:

  • Total Follower Count: Followers cannot be deposited in a bank account.
  • Gross Impressions: An impression merely means a post flashed across a screen for 0.2 seconds.
  • Post Likes: The lowest-effort user action in existence.

The 4 Metrics the C-Suite Actually Cares About

1. Marketing Efficiency Ratio (MER)

MER = Total Top-Line Revenue / Total Marketing Spend

Demonstrates whether marketing spend is scaling revenue efficiently or experiencing diminishing returns.

2. Net Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) & Payback Period

  • What did it cost to acquire a customer across our combined organic and creator campaigns?
  • How many months does it take for that customer's gross margin to pay back their acquisition cost?

3. Share of Voice (SOV) & Brand Search Lift

Track your brand’s organic search volume and social mentions relative to your top 3 competitors. A rising SOV consistently precedes market share gains.

4. Pipeline Velocity & Assisted Conversions (For B2B)

In B2B organizations, track how often decision-makers engaged with your executive thought leadership content during active sales cycles. Deals with active social touchpoints historically close 28% faster.
